Last Sunday night, one of the women was talking about creating a sacred space in your home (or somewhere throughout your day) where you can go and be quiet and spend some time with God. And, she talked, amongst other things, about how there are so many different ways you can spend time with God and how it's good to do a lot of different things. She listed off a whole list of different things, from listening to worship music to reading your Bible to keeping a prayer journal to meditation and so on. The one that stuck with me though, and has kept coming up in different, random places and conversations since then, is memorizing scripture.
So, yesterday, I decided I'm going to do it this year. I keep hearing about Beth Moore's program where you memorize two a month and have 24 verses committed to memory by the end of the year. I don't think I'm going to do her program, because I can't commit to anything else right now, but I'm going to steal the concept.
I'm cheating a little, since I almost missed January, so yesterday I decided the two verses I would (re)commit to memory were two that I memorized and love from my years in the youth group at West Houston:
"From those who have been given much, much will be expected and from those who have been entrusted with much, much more will be demanded." Luke 12:48
"Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witness, let us throw off everything that hinders and sin that so easily entangles. Let us run with perseverance the race set before us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith who, for the joy set before us, enduring the cross, scorning it's shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God." Hebrews 12:1-2
This month, the two that I've been wanting to really commit to memory but just never quite have, and which both seem to fit my life right now are going to be my verses to commit to memory for the month of February:
"Now to Him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we can ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work within us, to Him be glory in the church and in Jesus Christ throughout all generations, forever and ever! Amen." Ephesians 3:20-21
"My dear brothers, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry." James 1:19
Happy February 1st!
I love the beginnings of new months! :)
