If Landon and I had to pick a favorite place on this trip, Nice just might be it. It was just so gorgeous and a fun little beach town. And, it was BY FAR the prettiest port we docked at all week. You could look out any window or stand out on any deck and you were surrounded by a picturesque little town with brightly colored houses built right into the hillside. I loved it.
It's a little ironic though, because Nice and the French Riviera, our last 2 stops, were the two places that we put the least amount of effort into planning out the day, because we didn't really have any "must see" things there like the other days. So, a few weeks before the cruise, we decided to book a bike tour through the city.
Our bike tour was scheduled for mid morning, so after breakfast we took a little boat ride from out boat to shore (and took about 100 pictures in the process!) and then headed to Nice on a little train that went through the hillside. Again, so fun.
Then, after meeting up with our tour guide and the other people on the tour, we spent the next 4 hours riding all through Nice. We saw different landmarks and learned things about Nice's history (like how France and Italy kept fighting over it). We rode down the beach and saw where Nice's Ironman happens, we rode through the town square and heard the cannon that goes off everyday at noon to let people know it's time for lunch, we rode through old Nice and new Nice and saw a lot of good restaurants that we kept wanting to stop at It was HOT, but it was fun being on the bikes (except for when Landon had a car back into him in the middle of one of their markets, and then drive off like nothing happened! Then, at the end of the tour, we hit this hill. They described it on the website as a leisurely ride with a little hill. I'll agree that the ride was pretty leisurely, but that hill was not little. I would say we're in pretty good shape, and I was TIRED when we got to the top. It was fairly long and windy, so you kept thinking you were at the top and then you'd turn the hill and see you still had a long way to go, haha! It was totally worth it though, because the view from the top was spectacular--both when we were at the city's edge and when we biked over to the harbor. It was stunning. And, the ride back down the hill was pretty fun too! :)
After the tour we headed back to the boat for some free lunch--it was a treat actually being in the city we were docked in. Then, we changed into our bathing suits and hit the beach for the rest of the afternoon--it was so cool to think that we were swimming in the Mediterranean Sea! On the way to the beach we stopped in at a little shop and Morgan and I got some big, fun hats to wear--we dubbed them our French Riviera hats! I love mine--now I just need to find somewhere in Texas to wear it to!
Anyway, when we finally made it down to the water, it was perfect. The water was a nice temperature and crystal clear and a beautiful greenish blue, depending on how the sun hit it. It was weird though, because everywhere we went to the beach in France, there were rocks instead of sand--and I may be a little bit of a wuss, but they sure did hurt to walk on! Not that I'm complaining or anything, because it was all just part of the experience--the beautiful water, the rocks and all of the topless women. It was definitely an experience, but a fun afternoon for sure!
And then, that night was our last formal night of the trip. It was fun to get all dressed up and we had a good time taking pictures--we figured we could get just as good of ones with our own cameras and not pay the cruise twenty dollars a picture, or whatever crazy price they were charging. Then, after dinner we took some pictures with our awesome server and with Clare and Aiden. I love getting dressed up, so it was a good night. :) But, it was a little sad because it was starting to sink in that the next day was our last day. It was a jam packed week, but it was flying by too fast!
