Our garden, year three

This year, our gardening experience was kicked off with my sweet husband coming home one day with these pink roses--we both thought we needed a little color in our front yard and this rose bush at least added a little pop of pink.
Then, since our raised beds were already ready to go, the next weekend, our good friend Matt came over and they filled them and then his planter boxes.  It's amazing how much cheaper dirt by the truckload is compared to bagged dirt.

Yay!  Now, all we need are some plants!
And, before they headed to Matt and Jenna's, they also planted our apple tree.  I can't wait to get some apples from it (hopefully!).  The orange tree and the blueberry and blackberry bushes will hopefully go in the ground sometime this weekend.
Then, over the last few days, we've been reading up on square foot gardening (thanks Logan and Elizabeth!) and making a plan for what to plant and where.  After work on Tuesday we went and bought the plants and Wednesday and Thursday I marked off the beds and got the plants in the ground.
Then, tonight, Landon built a little fence around the beds to keep the dogs out, so we don't have a repeat of last year...and we officially called the raised beds DONE. :)  It was a good feeling.
This year my goal was to plant enough of some things that we could actually use them, instead of having to buy them at the store.  We'll see how it turns out. :)
We have...
 tomatoes
 cucumbers
summer squash and zucchini

cantaloupe

chives
bell peppers

rosemary

 okra

watermelon
basil

 thyme
cilantro

And, you can't see them because they're still underground, but we're also trying out potatoes, onions, green onions and garlic this year.

In some pots we have some more potatoes and onions, and a pumpkin :)

And in our big pots we're trying out some strawberries.  I'm hoping they do better this year than last year.

And, while I was making dinner, Landon planted the things we're trying to grow from seed...some corn, green beans, carrots, brocoli, spinach and lettuce.  We're doing an experiment--we planted some right in the planter boxes and some inside and we're going to see what works.

Happy Spring! :)
